Favourite command of the day – kodi-send

This is an update of a post I wrote a couple of years ago about triggering an update of OpenELECs media library since the XBMC project has since changed its name to Kodi.

For the videos now use:
OpenELEC:~ # kodi-send --action="KODI.updatelibrary(video)"

Also worth noting is that nowadays root seems to be the default login.

Favourite command of the day – xbmc-send

Using xbmc-send one can remotely via SSH trigger a rescan of the media library. For example the videos like here below.
apathy:~ $ xbmc-send --action="XBMC.updatelibrary(video)"
Sending action: XBMC.updatelibrary(video)

The xbmc-send command can be used for a lot of things and is well worth looking further into.
This works fine for me on OpenELEC version 3.0.6.

I love my XBMC htpc, ask anyone who knows me but it can be a royal pain to compile and install since have an AMD Fusion based system..
A few days ago I figured I would just upgrade a bit and go for the 3.0kernel. This pretty quickly landed me in a dependency hell since I also upgraded ubuntu to 11.10 in the middle of it.

Anyhow, today after putting up dinner for far too long while hunting compilation errors for xbmc et al I figured “why not give OpenELEC a try”..
Downloaded the 100MB or so tar ball, unpack, usb stick in,run script, boot on stick, do install, reboot, profit.
All in all a couple of minutes from zero to “it just works”™!

All hail simplicity! (sometimes)
